Chai Songyan

Chai Songyan, female, was born in October 1929 in Liaoyang City, Liaoning Province, a bachelor's degree holder, is the Chief Physician and Professor of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated to Capital Medical University.

Professor Chai took Chen Shenwu, a modern Chinese medicine master as her teacher in 1948. In 1950, she passed the Chinese medicine practitioner qualification examination and became a  TCM physician. She graduated from Beijing Medical College in 1957. She was the second, third and fourth batches of national instructor for the inheritance of academic experience from TCM experts, and the fourth batch of doctoral instructor of TCM gynecology and received special subsidies from the State Council. In 1992, she was named "March 8th" Red-Banner Holder by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Health, and won the "Special Contribution Award for 60 Years of Engaging in TCM" granted by the Beijing Association of Chinese Medicine in 2010, and the "Famous Gynecologist" Award by China Association of TCM and Pharmacy in 2013. In the same year, she was rated as "Capital Renowned Physicians" by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Health and Beijing Administration of TCM. Two years later, she was awarded "Soong Ching Ling Camphor Tree Award" by the China Welfare Institute. In 2017, she got the honorary title of "National TCM Great Master."

Professor Chai established the "Chai Songyan's Academic System of TCM Gynecology", taking "Chai Songyan's Theory of Menstruation Physiology", "The Four Mosts for Kidney", "Two Yangs Causing Disease" and "Three Theories for Women" as the theoretical core, the system is characterized by conforming to the law of cycle, caring for yin-fluid and blood and body fluid, overcoming the hard with soft medicine, adjusting the function of gasification, invigorating the lungs and kidneys. She focuses on tongue and pulse diagnosis clinically. She is one of the founders of contemporary Chinese gynecology.
