Chen Tongyun, Chief Physician of Department of Dermatology, Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), was born in December 1921 in a well-known family of TCM. Since graduating from Furen University in February 1944, she has been engaged in clinical work of TCM for 73 years. She was the instructor of the third and fourth batches of mentor-disciple project for national TCM experts. She was awarded the title of Prominent National Doctor of the Capital in 2013 and was awarded the first “Most Beautiful Female Doctor” by the China Medical Women's Association in 2016. In 2017, the State Administration of TCM awarded her the title of “Top 100 Famous TCM Physicians”.

In 1950, she prepared the establishment of the Beijing Association of TCM and she established the Beijing Advanced School of TCM in 1951. In March 1956, she prepared the establishment of Beijing College of TCM, and she was one of the founders of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine as well as one of the founders of Chinese medicine education in New China. She created the theory of "Internal Treating and External Recuperating", advocated the theory of "Regulating Five Viscera" , and established a "Four-Dimensional Therapy”(Etiology, Pathogenesis , Syndrome, Symptom) . She was the pioneer of cosmetic dermatology of TCM who firstly put forward the four causes of inflammatory skin disease: heat, dampness, toxin, and blood stasis, and established the rule of Clearing Lung and Stomach, and Regulating Liver and Spleen. She concluded that the pigmented dermatosis is caused by “liver, spleen and kidney dysfunction, blood stasis and Qi stagnation."  She improved the theory of treating difficult dermatoses disease from dampness, fire, blood and blood stasis.  Her theory and practice have a significant impact on dermatology and cosmetic medicine of TCM. She has gained deep academic essence from Mr. Ha and Mr. Zhao, and is the leader of inheritance of Yanjing School of Zhao's dermatology. She is proficient in the diagnosis and treatment of beauty-damaging dermatoses, and is a pioneer in cosmetic dermatology of TCM.
