Primary headache is a common disease in Department of Neurology and Department of Pain. The common types are migraine and tension headache, and headache attack can seriously affect the patient's life and work. In 2009, the Department of Acupuncture established a headache clinic, which carried out a number of clinical and basic studies on the acute and remission stage of migraine without aura, menstrual-related migraine, tension-type headache in the acute stage and remission stage of non-threatened migraine, and preliminarily confirmed that acupuncture has a definite effect on headache. Taking the lead in formulating the acupuncture diagnosis and treatment standards for migraine in the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, our department has formed the technique of "treating migraine by stages, types, meridians and syndromes" that has a wide influence in Beijing and even the whole country, and highlights the experience and characteristics of famous and old undergraduate TCM practitioners. Acupuncture treatment of primary headache with prominent advantages not only has a good analgesic effect on the attack period, but also can significantly reduce the incidence of headache frequency and pain through remission period preventive treatment, improving the quality of life of patients with headache.
