Yuan Shuzhang

Yuan Shuzhang (1913 - 1980), male, Hui nationality, was born in Beijing. Mr. Yuan loved medicine since he was a child. At the age of 16, he studied Chinese medicine with Mr. Ma Zuoquan, a Chinese medicine veteran. He was admitted to Huabei Medical College in 1934. He began to practice medicine in Beijing after passing the medical examination in 1938. He was good at treating internal medicine and pediatric diseases. His medical skills were excellent and his curative effect was remarkable, obtaining a high reputation.

After the founding of new China, Mr. Yuan worked at Beijing Second United Clinic. In 1962, he was transferred to Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where he served as Chief Physician and Deputy Director of Department of Pediatrics. In 1978, he was identified as the priority academic experience inheritance object among the famous old doctors of TCM in Beijing. Mr. Yuan was a skillful doctor with high medical ethics.

He was famous for the clinical treatment of pediatric neurological diseases and difficult miscellaneous syndrome, especially in the treatment of children with various types of epilepsy, convulsions, parencephalia and other diseases. He divided infantile convulsions into three types and epilepsy into five types, and developed Qingxian Pills, Jiangxian Pills, Compound Zhijing Powder, Brain Disease Zaisheng Pills and other characteristic drugs for the treatment of epilepsy, and achieved significant results. These preparations are still in use in pediatrics of our hospital. Mr. Yuan was knowledgeable. He collected thousands of medical books and medical records from past dynasties, often providing help and basis for solving clinical problems. He summarized decades of experiences in medical practice and wrote a number of papers such as Overview of TCM Pediatric Common Diseases, which were included in Selected Experiences of  TCM Veteran in Beijing, Practical TCM and other medical books, leaving valuable wealth.
