Zhang Shijie

Zhang Shijie (1919 - 1989), male, was born in Beijing. Born in a family of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Mr. Zhang was deeply influenced by his family since he was a child. He studied medicine with his father for many years and was admitted to Huabei Medical College in 1938 to study the theories and various schools of thought of TCM. After graduation, he practiced medicine with his father in Huailai County, Hebei Province in 1942 and began to practice medicine in Beijing in 1949.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was enrolled in a TCM research class sponsored by the Ministry of Health and studied at the Department of Medicine of Beijing Medical University in 1952. In 1957, he graduated and worked at Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine as a Physician and Chief Physician. He was once a member of the Branch of Department of Pediatrics of Beijing Association of TCM. In 1981, he was identified as the priority academic experience inheritance object among the famous old doctors of TCM in Beijing.

Mr. Zhang has been a doctor for decades, he was rich in experiences, open-minded and studious. In 1959, he studied with Qi Zhenhua, a famous pediatric doctor. By inheriting Qi's rigorous dialectical attitude, refined prescription and noble medical ethics, and by studying the clinical experiences of Zhou Muxin and Yang Yinong, he formed his unique academic view by combining his own practice. He achieved remarkable results in the clinical treatment of pediatric difficult and severe disease, being loved and praised by patients. Mr. Zhang had been engaged in clinical teaching for many years. He is strict in his study, kind and patient. He had compiled a large number of teaching handouts and trained many talents. He summed up his experiences and wrote more than 10 academic papers, including Discussion on Infectious Hepatitis, Experiences on Treatment of Cough and Asthma, and Zhang Shijie's Experiences in Treating Infantile Chronic Cough, and he also edited the book TCM on Food Health Care, which left precious wealth for future generations.
