Sa Renshan

Sa Renshan (1898-1976), male, courtesy name Jinshou, also known as Shannon Zara, a native of Beijing, Oroqen nationality. Mr. Sa dropped out of the University of the Republic of China in his early years and studied traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) internal medicine from Mr. Wang Pengyun, and then from Mr. Yu Yueru in the Shangsiyuan Chuobanchu (the Bonesetting  Department) of Qing Dynasty for 13 years due to a keen interest in medicine. He practiced medicine in Beijing in 1936. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the Director of Chaoyangmen Polyclinic; surgeon of the Department of Orthopedics in the First and Second Outpatient Clinics in Beijing; Deputy Director of Department of Orthopedics of Beijing Hospital of TCM; orthopedic teacher of Beijing Advanced School of TCM; member of Academic Exchange Committee of TCMe and Modern Medicine of Chinese Medical Association; Director of the National Association of TCM and the Department of Orthopedics. He was an expert in dislocations, sprains and bruises. He used to advocate the reform of fracture fixation appliances, such as iron wire splint, wooden upper and lower limb support plates and leather knee-clasping appliance, and further innovated external medicine, such as Washing Medicine, Dingtong Powder and Dingtong Plaster and internal medicine, like Wanying Pill, Dingtong Pill and Jiegu Pill. He engaged in the clinical research of lumbar disc protrusion, limb fractures and shoulder periarthritis in his later years.

He wrote several papers, such as A Brief Introduction of Orthopedics, TCM Treatment of Calcaneal and Fibular Fractures, Method and Experience and Introduction of Experiences in Treating Double Fracture of Forearm, which have made great contributions to the development of orthopedics in TCM.
