The Emergency Department of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Capital Medical University was established in 1978, assuming the responsibility of emergency and first aid service in the hospital. After more than 30 years of construction and development, the department has established a complete service system, and has become a professional platform with clinical emergency response capability and rational talent echelon. At present, it is a TCM emergency clinical base for National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a regional treatment center of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a leader unit of key discipline, key specialty and cooperation group of TCM emergency medicine of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a director committee unit of the emergency branch of China Association of Chinese Medicine, a president unit for Beijing Association of Integrative Medicine, quality control center for Beijing Center for Emergency and ICU, and director unit for the Clinical Department of Emergency Medicine of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.

The Emergency Department now has 13 doctors and more than 20 nurses, including 3 chief physicians and 2 deputy chief physicians. The department has a reasonable team structure with three generations of emergency doctors, and high-level talents with doctoral and master degrees. The working area includes the flowing clinic, emergency room and observation room, with a total of 27 beds, all of which are monitor ones. The establishment of the perfect triage system, emergency care system, emergency plans and green channels have greatly improved work efficiency, providing patients with more convenient and humane services. The department firmly adheres to the "high speed, high efficiency, high sense of responsibility" principle.

Under the leadership of academic leaders of President Liu Qingquan and Director Yao Weihai, the department has developed in an all-round way, receiving about 40,000 patients and rescuing 1,600 each year. The department is equipped with cardiopulmonary resuscitation machines, defibrillators, Glidescopes, invasive and non-invasive ventilators, hemodynamic monitors, bronchoscopes, monitors and other rescue equipment. By paying equal attention to traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, the department has developed treatment techniques for  emergency and severe diseases, like tracheal intubation, deep vein intubation, percutaneous tracheotomy, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, as well as TCM decay debridement, oral care and other techniques that highlight the characteristics of Chinese medicine.

In addition to clinical tasks, the Emergency Department also plays an active role in teaching. The Emergency Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, compiled by Professor Liu Qingquan, has been taken as a textbook of emergency medicine in many TCM colleges and universities. The department trains more than 100 resident doctors every year. In recent years, it has set up the core course of emergency clinic of traditional Chinese medicine and the basic life support course of American Heart Association (AHA). It is currently the training base of AHA for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. In recent years, with the funds supported by a number of research funds, the Emergency Department has conducted in-depth research in sepsis gastrointestinal dysfunction, external hyperthermia and other fields. Each year, dozens of articles have been published on core journal, and several national patents have been obtained.

Unswervingly adhering to the principle of taking clinical practice as the foundation, solving acute and serious problems and miscellaneous diseases as its characteristics, and prioritizing the safety and quality of emergency medical treatment, the overall level of emergency clinical practice of the department stands ahead of its peers. In the future, taking medical treatment as the basis, we will strengthen teaching and scientific research, promote the construction of talent pool, and constantly improve our medical quality and level with more complete system, scientific management, smooth workflow, and reasonable talent team.
