The digestive  center is a key department established in 1956 when the hospital was founded. Because of the numerous great physicians, notable efficacy, and the considerable influence on national digestive disease field, it is the main post- graduate education base of Capital University of Medical Sciences in digestive disease of TCM and also of the integration of TCM and modern medicine, and also the key digestive disease specialty of the integration of TCM and modern medicine in Beijing, key Gastroenterology specialty of TCM granted by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, dependable and leading center of Gastroenterology Society of China Association of Chinese Medicine.

The center treated more than 60,000 patients in clinics and more than 600 patients in wards annually. It has 37 medical staff, among whom there are 21 doctors, including 2 national famous veteran doctors of TCM, 5 chief physicians, 5 associate chief physicians, and 8 with master or doctor degree in medicine. It possesses clinics, wards, endoscope room, and gastroenteric motivity room, with over 1,200 square meter coverage of working place. Guided by the nationally notable digestive disease experts and academic leaders Professor Li Qiangou and Professor Wei Beihai, and department chief Professor Zhang Shengsheng, and constantly supported by the hospital, it has gained significant progress with more than 20 research findings, 200 or so academic papers, and 8 monographs in the past 20 years.

The center possesses advanced diagnostic and treating equipments, such as electronic gastroscope and enteroscope of Olympus from Japan, ¹³C automatic expiration detection from Britain, digestive tract motivation monitoring system from Sweden, colon treatment system from America, and so on. It is capable of processing Helicobacter pylori infection detection, electrogastrogram, esophageal manometry, procto-anal manometry, gastro- esophageal dynamic PH detection, bile reflux detection, and so on. Besides, it develops featuring therapies by integrating TCM and modern medicine, such as endoscopic treatment, enteroclysm by herbs, point application, iontophoresis, magnetic treatment, gastroenteric motivity promotion, bathing and washing in herb soups, and so on.

The center preserves the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine and highlights modern science and technology to promote efficacy. It features in developing synchronically with modern medicine, supported by rich techniques and advanced equipments. We have been accumulated abundant experience and gained distinctive superiority in treating gastrointestinal cancer, gastrointestinal precancerous lesion, liver cirrhosis, ulcerative colitis, alimentary tract hemorrhage, pancreatitis, HP infection related diseases, gastroesophageal reflux disease, functional dyspepsia, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, hepatic adipose infiltration, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic diarrhea, and constipation, by relying more on TCM, and also integrating TCM and modern medicine, localism and wholism, and endotherapy and external treatment as well.

Besides, we have established special clinics which are simple, convenient, inexpensive, and favorable, for specific diseases. We have developed featuring medicine such as Hemostasis 2, Hemostasis 3, invigorating spleen and warming kidney pill, invigorating spleen and stomach pill, invigorating spleen and smoothing liver pill, expelling depression and clearing stomach pill, invigorating spleen and relieving flatulence pill, glycose and lipoids dropping pill and etc.
