The Department of Ulcerative Vascular Surgery of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded in 1956. During the past half century, the Department has inherited and carried forward the rich experience and techniques of the experts of the older generation, such as Zhao Bingnan, Fang Zhixuan, Wang Yuzhang and Lyu Peiwen. By staying committed to constant innovation, responding to the changes of disease spectrum, keeping pace with the times, cultivating and developing new growth points, the Department of Ulcerative Vascular Surgery has formed its own characteristics. It is the Key Clinical Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery of the Ministry of Health, Key Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine Ulcer Diseases of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Key Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, North China Medical Center (Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery), Key Specialty/Discipline of Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery of Beijing.

According to the construction requirements of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, our department takes peripheral vascular diseases and ulcer diseases as the discipline development platform to form three specialist diagnosis and treatment units of chronic skin ulcer, diabetic foot and peripheral vascular diseases. With the help of traditional Chinese medicine therapies such as Tazi treatment, nibbling debridement, medicated thread and Chinese medicine application, the traditional preparations of our hospital such as Vermilion Ointment Yarn are flexibly applied in clinical practice. And with the combination of modern medical technology, such as Vacuum Suction, TCM syndrome differentiation skin grafting, lower extremity vascular interventional therapy, after many years of clinical practice and constant optimization, the Department has formed an improved TCM diagnosis and treatment program. The Department works to solve the current tricky problems in western medicine: vascular restenosis after interventional therapy; incurable problems of peripheral vascular disease of erysipelas and other infectious diseases; chronic refractory skin ulcer caused by peripheral vascular disease. For diabetes, TCM treatment has the advantages of accelerating wound healing, reducing amputation rate and disability rate, and improving quality of life.

At present, there are 37 beds in the ward, with an annual outpatient patients of more than 90,000. During the Twelfth Five Year Plan period, the specialty has achieved positive growth, with the number of outpatient visits and patients admitted and discharged, and the medical income rising year by year, representing a virtuous circle of growth. The specialty keeps sharing its academic experience with the surrounding regions and other provinces and cities, maintains frequent academic contacts and exchanges with large and medium-sized hospitals and academic research institutions in China, thereby forming its own academic networks. The new theory, new techniques and new therapies have been incorporated into the characteristic diagnosis and treatment system of our department, contributing to the enhanced the professional treatment. The Department has cooperated with Shuguang Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Longhua Hospital Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dongzhimen Hospital Affiliated to Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and Oriental Hospital. In addition, the Department has cooperated with the Burn Department of Beijing Jishuitan Hospital in the surgical treatment of wounds, partnered with the School of Stomatology of Fourth Military Medical University in terms of artificial biological skin research, worked with the Department of Materials of Tsinghua University for superfine treatment of traditional Chinese medicine, teamed up with bone marrow transplantation center of the 307th Hospital of the Chinese PLA on the extraction of bone marrow stem cells, collaborated with Beijing Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of Academy of Military Medical Sciences on drug toxicology research, worked with Beijing Institute of Occupational Disease Prevention and Treatment on side effects of drugs, worked with Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Xuanwu Hospital and People's Hospital of Peking University in vascular surgery. These cooperations have laid a solid foundation for the development of the discipline and enhanced the popularity of the discipline. In addition, the Department has created its own website for better publicizing the specialty online. This website will enable patients to have a better understanding about health care and services of our specialty, thus expanding the influence of our department.
