Yao Zhengping

Yao Zhengping (1908 - 1979), was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province. Mr. Yao has been fond of Chinese medicine since he was a child. He began to study medicine at the age of 17 with Zhang Yousong, a famous doctor in Beijing. He has studied the classics of ancient books, especially The Theory of Spleen and Stomach, benefiting from what he has learned greatly. In 1927, he began to practice medicine in Beijing, and was good at treating miscellaneous diseases of internal medicine. His treatment methods has remarkable effect, being praised by the patients.

After the founding of new China, Mr. Yao worked successively in Beijing Fifth Hospital and Beijing School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In 1956, Beijing Hospital of TCM was established, and Mr. Yao was the first batch of employee recruited to work in the hospital as Chief Physician of internal medicine. In the 1960s, he established the Nephropathy Group of TCM, and served as the Group Leader, leading the whole group in tackling the key problems of nephropathy treatment. In 1978, he was identified as the priority academic experiences inheritance object among the famous old doctors of TCM in Beijing.

Mr. Yao was good at the treatment of miscellaneous diseases in internal medicine, and he also has high attainments in the treatment of heart and kidney diseases. He emphasized on the function of Mingmen (GV 4) and Triple Energizers, believing that Triple Energizers are the beginning of Mingmen (GV 4). He emphasized that the treatment of nephropathy is mainly to maintain the true yin and yang of Mingmen (GV 4) and to emphasize the function of spleen and stomach. He also established the therapy of chicken soup, which achieved good clinical results. Mr. Yao paid attention to the summary of clinical experiences. He has written more than 10 papers such as My Opinions on Pathogenesis and Clinical Treatment of Acute and Chronic Nephritis, and some articles have been included in Selected Experiences of Old TCMin Beijing, which has left precious wealth for posterity. His descendants, Zhang Shuyu and Zhu Zhihui, still work at the hospital.
