Zhao Bingnan (1899 -1984), formerly known as Zhao Deming, Hui nationality, Islamic name "Idris", originally from Dezhou, Shandong Province, was born to a poor family in Wanping (now belongs to Beijing), Hebei Province. Zhao Bingnan was thin and weak since childhood, and had smallpox, dysentery, measles and malaria in just three years from the age of 5 to 7. The special life experiences made him deeply understand how precious one's life is, sowing the seeds of the aspiration to become a doctor to relieve pain for others in his childish mind. At the age of 6, Zhao Bingnan entered a private school and began his 6-year study, which came to a sudden end due to poverty, throwing him to the society too early. Zhao Bingnan was greatly shocked in his teenage years to see the struggling masses fighting cold and hunger, which reinforced his aspiration to be a doctor to rescue them.

In 1912, at the age of 13, Zhao Bingnan began to study traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) dermatophytosis and ulcer surgery from Ding De'en, a well-known doctor in Beijing Deshan Medical Center. In a short span of three years, he read up on dozens of medical works, including Surgical Standards, Yangyi Daquan (Complete Methods to treat Ulcer), Surgery Enlightenment, Yizong Jinjian (Golden Mirror of Medicine), and Compendium of Materia Medica. His hard and sedulous work deeply moved Mr. Ding, who later imparted his lifelong knowledge to him.
