Founded in 1956, the Department of Acupuncture/Encephalopathy of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Capital Medical University boasts a group of acupuncture masters with certain academic influence in China, including Wang Leting, the famous acupuncture master, known as "Lu in the South and Wang in the North " together with He Puren, the founder of "Santong Needling Method", the member of the first batch of National TCM Great Master and representative inheritor of TCM acupuncture of human intangible cultural heritage, Xia Shouren, the expert in treating pain disorder, Yu Shuzhuang, the pioneer of research on propagated sensation along meridians and Wang Juyi, the founder of meridians syndromes differentiation, as well as has profound academic foundation. Now it has developed into a national key clinical specialist department, national TCM key specialist department of acupuncture, foremost discipline under National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, foremost medical major of "Sailing Plan" under Beijing Hospitals Authority, core specialist department in capital city (X) of national key TCM specialist department covering project of Beijing, featured diagnosis and treatment center of TCM of Beijing and chairman unit of Beijing Acupuncture and Moxibustion Society. It consists of Beijing Key Laboratory of Acupuncture Neuroregulation, "He Puren National TCM Great Master Studio" under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, "Inheritance 3 +3 Project"-He's Santong Needling Method Studio of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing and "Zhou De'an Famous Doctor Inheritance Studio" under National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. At present, there are 41 physicians in the department, including 18 doctors and 18 masters, physicians with master's degree or above accounting for 88% of the total; 18 physicians with senior technical titles, accounting for 44%; 1 doctoral supervisor and 5 master supervisors. Moreover, it also has 1 National TCM Great Master, 1 Famous Doctor of Chinese Medicine in the Capital, 1 Vice-chairman of the China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion, 1 Chairman of Beijing Association of Acupuncture, 8 national inheritors of traditional Chinese medicine, 5 excellent clinical talents of Chinese medicine, 1 supporting young talent of China Association for Science and Technology, 1 talent of "Beijing Ten-hundred-thousand -million Talents Project in the health system of Beijing, 1 technological and scientific star in Beijing, 2 backbone of high-level health talents of Beijing health system and 3 winners of "Qingmiao Program" of Beijing Hospitals Authority.

It has established three wards for cerebrovascular disease, complicated cases of neurological diseases and rehabilitation in inpatient department, with 116 beds and over 100% occupancy rate. More than 2,900 patients are admitted to the inpatient department every year. In recent years, its DRGs performance has been ranked first among the grade-A tertiary  traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in Beijing. In addition, it has built  7/24 green channel for acute cerebrovascular disease, and provided the whole-course diagnosis and treatment for earliest phase of cerebral infarction, including intravenous thrombolysis, intra-arterial thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy and rehabilitation during recovery phase, intensive care and rescue, treatment of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, PT/OT rehabilitation, language training, swallowing training and botulinum toxin injection. For neurological diseases, lumbar puncture, electromyography, electroencephalogram, muscle biopsy, nerve biopsy and other advanced diagnostic methods have been widely used. With an area 950 square meters, 78 beds and annual outpatient visits of 120,000 people, its of acupuncture outpatient service has opened the specialist consulting rooms for head and face pain, insomnia, hearing loss and tinnitus disease, stroke, varicose veins of lower extremities, skin diseases, menstrual diseases, ovarian dysfunction and other special diseases, showing outstanding advantages.

Department of Acupuncture/Encephalopathy has a strong academic influence over TCM field. It develops the theoretical system of He's Santong Needling Method of acupuncture, which has made outstanding contribution to acupuncture therapeutics in modern times, and laid the foundation for the national standard of fire needle. It possesses the unique specialist technologies such as He's Fire Needle Therapy, 13 Therapies for Stoke and puncturing by acupuncture needle. As one of the group leader of Stroke Group of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, it has formulated the Stroke Treatment Plan with Acupuncture and Moxibustion including "13 Therapies for Stoke" and "He's Fire Needle Therapy", which now has been promoted in the whole country and applied in Beijing as "Promotion and Application Program of Treatment Standard and Therapy of Acupuncture during Recovery Phase of Cerebrovascular Diseases, the only Chinese medicine project of in the "Special Project of Promoting Scientific and Technological Achievements of Ten Dangerous Diseases in Capital City" under Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission. Relying on the platform of Beijing Acupuncture and Moxibustion Society, 1 + X + N Project under Beijing Municipal Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the department actively promotes the coordinated development of the specialist department and plays the role in demonstrating, driving and radiating, developing as an Beijing acupuncture specialists alliance with interdepartmental connection, high management efficiency, outstanding professional ability and high reputation.

Since the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period, the department has undertaken 53 projects of the National 973 Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, with a total funding of 20.1297 million yuan; published 278 articles in core journals in China and 80 articles in SCI/EI, with the cumulative impact factor of 152.85, including 6 articles with impact factor greater than 5; published 9 treatises; compiled 5 textbooks including the 13th Five-Year Plan for Higher Education of Traditional Chinese Medicine; developed 4 standards for TCM associations of National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; obtained 6 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological achievement awards; and gained 7 patents.
