The conference was sponsored by Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Beijing Acupuncture and Moxibustion Society and Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine International Exchange & Cooperation Center, co-organized by Acupuncture and Moxibustion Center of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and obtained strong support from Beijing Municipal Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Beijing Municipal Administration of Hospitals, Capital Medical University and Beijing Association for International Science & Technology Cooperation.

The acupuncture in Beijing has a long history. Fusion of neuroscience helps its further development.

Liu Qingquan, the President of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said that the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion of Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established in 1956 and it was one of the earliest acupuncture and Moxibustion department of government hospitals in China. At the beginning of the establishment of the department, many Chinese famous doctors and acupuncture masters of worldwide fame had been gathered in the department, such as Wang Leting of gold needle, who enjoyed the title of "South Lu and North Wang" in the field of acupuncture in China, He Huiwu of tubular needle, who studied in Japan in his early years, Xia Shouren, who could treat pain related diseases effectively, and He Puren of fire needle. They enjoy a sterling reputation among the people of the capital city and a distinctive national feature. They are the important representatives of acupuncture in Beijing. Over the past 50 years, after four generations of academic leaders, on the basis of inheriting the academic thoughts of many acupuncture masters, the department keeps innovating and developing, and has made outstanding achievements in clinical medical treatment, scientific research and acupuncture teaching.

In recent years, Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion has carried out a number of clinical studies around the direction of discipline construction. The department has published more than 30 SCI papers, expanding the international influence of acupuncture. With the increasing number and quality of acupuncture research papers published at home and abroad, interdisciplinary research and multi-disciplinary collaboration have become one of the characteristics of high-level research in acupuncture. President Liu said that many high-quality SCI papers related to acupuncture published in the world have a good knowledge of neurology, which shows that if acupuncture and neurology can be integrated from a deeper and broader perspective, the future research on acupuncture will certainly enter a new height and the international influence of acupuncture will step to a new level.

Acupuncture research should give full play to its advantages and establish long-term mechanism

As an important part of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture therapy has attracted more and more attention all over the world because of its unique curative effect and advantages. According to the results of a survey conducted by the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies, 183 countries had used acupuncture therapy among the 202 countries surveyed, 178 countries had clinical practices among the 192 members of United Nations, 59 countries had established the related institutions, and many countries had been partially or fully covered by insurance. However, due to the lack of international standards and the unclear biological mechanism of therapeutic effect and other factors, the wider recognition of acupuncture was greatly restricted at home and abroad.

Tu Zhitao, the Director of Beijing Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, said that Beijing has abundant clinical resources and good research conditions for acupuncture. In the future, Beijing will give full play to its advantages, consider establishing a long-term mechanism, a permanent platform, and joint projects, and promote the flow of relevant professionals through projects, seminars, and other means.
